Tinubu Meets Labour Leaders Ahead Of Planned Nationwide Protest Over Insecurity
President Bola Tinubu has held a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) amid the plan by the labour union to embark on a nationwide protest over rising insecurity in the country.
Tinubu met the labour leaders at the Aso Villa on Tuesday night.
Present at the meeting were the President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero; the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris; and Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.
Also present were the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and others.
“We came for a consultation with the President, and we have finished, so we have to go back to our meeting and then continue tomorrow. By tomorrow, you will get the outcome.
Asked whether the NLC was still insisting on the protest,” he said, “If I’m insisting or I’m not insisting, I’ll communicate to you.
“It’s not an organisation that one person rules. Now, you have a meeting of the labour and the governors’ forum.
“We’ll go back to the drawing board and digest all that Mr. President said to us and move forward from there,” he added.
‘Consultation Ongoing’
Uzodimma explained that consultation among major stakeholders is ongoing.
“Consultation is going on. We are dialoguing. As you said, at the end of the day, you know what you are supposed to know and what you want to know.
“Of course, we are here to serve the country, both the labour, the government, and the governed.
“We are all working in service to the nation,” the governor said.
The minister explained that the NLC had called for a meeting with the President
Citizens who are also members of the NLC wanted to see Mr. President, and they’ve seen Mr. President.
“And of course, you know they are happy they’ve seen Mr. President, and they’ve heard firsthand that at least the President has driven the economy out of the woods, so it’s very good news,” Onyejeocha said.
