Two People Feared Killed As Soldiers Confront Protesters In Nyanya, Nasarawa State

Attempt by officials of Nasarawa state to move out occupants of an illegal market from their shanties in Masaka,a suburb close to the Federal Capital Territory turned bloody with two of the traders feared killed.

Midday on Wednesday,the state officials had successfully demolished the illegal market with the assistance of the police.

The state government said the illegal market was being used for sale of drugs and stolen items.

However, the traders,who are mostly from the northern parts of the country were angered by the demolition and they Soon organized themselves,armed with whatever they laid their hands on and confronted the police.

The tear gas canisters fired by the police didn’t deter the traders who threw stones and iron rods at them.

The traders blocked the busy Abuja -Keffi express way creating a gridlock.

The military was called in as the traders who were in their hundreds overwhelmed the police.

The soldiers were said to have deployed live bullets which led to the death of two of the protesting traders.

Normalcy has returned to the area even as the police parade the area.
