Operators of commercial vehicles not painted in the official taxi colors of Abuja had a rude surprise on Monday evening, as officials of the Task Force on Public Transportation swooped on them impounding a number of cars.
In the confusion that followed, a number of passengers were injured and the situation resulted in traffic gridlock.
Some byestanders including hawkers who spoke to signaturetv.org said that driving the unpainted commercial vehicles off the road would create difficulties for commuters.
According to them the Abuja authorities have not provided enough buses to meet the needs of the teeming number of commuters in the Federal Capital.
An official who did not want his name mentioned because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of the Task Force said the action was taken because the operators refused to heed to several warnings issued by the authorities.
