Sultan, Kukah Condemn Killing Of Student Accused Of Blasphemy

There was outrage on Thursday following the killing of Deborah Samuel, a female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, over alleged blasphemy.

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, condemned the killing of the female student and called for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

Also, the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah, who condemned the killing, said it had nothing to do with religion and those behind the barbaric act were criminals.

However, The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sanusi Abubakar said two suspects had been arrested in connection with the killing while a manhunt had been launched for fleeing suspects.


2023: Jonathan Has Not Resigned His PDP Membership– Party Spokesman

The People’s Democratic Party PDP says Former President Goodluck Jonathan has not resigned his membership of the party yet.

The National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Debo Ologunagba, who spoke during an interview with newsmen on Friday said he was unaware of Jonathan’s resignation from the membership of the party.

Ologunagba’s statement adds to the conversations about Jonathan’s rumoured interest in the 2023 polls. Earlier in the week, a group had purchased the APC presidential nomination and expression of interest forms for the former Bayelsa State governor.


Naira Crashes Further As APC, PDP set to conduct Primaries

Ahead of the primaries of the two leading political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aspirants are mopping up dollars across the country, leading to the further depreciation of the naira.

The rush by the aspirants to buy the foreign currency has added pressure on the naira, which has been on the slide for long.

The bureau de change operators said politicians seeking elective offices have been moving around the country to buy the foreign currency, which sources said is much easier to use “to reach out to delegates” and other critical stakeholders instead of carrying big bags.


At Least 11 Dead After Boat Capsized Off Puerto Rico – US Coast Guard

United States Coast Guard has announced that at least 11 people died after their boat, which was carrying an unknown number of passengers, overturned off the coast of Puerto Rico, on Thursday.

As of 6 PM Thursday, 31 survivors have been rescued, 11 female, and 20 males while 11 deceased have been recovered.

A spokesperson for the US Customs and Border Protection said that the shipwreck occurred 10 nautical miles (18 kilometers) north of Desecheo Island, an uninhabited US territory between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
