Lawmakers Vote On 1999 Constitution Amendment, block women’s inclusion in politics

The National Assembly on Tuesday granted financial and administrative autonomy to all the local governments across Nigeria as it sought to amend the 1999 constitution.

Lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly voted on 68 bills, accepting some while rejecting others.

However, lawmakers voted against pension for presiding officers of the National Assembly and rejected virtually all provisions designed to improve women’s inclusion in Nigerian politics and society.

The amendment is one of the most important endeavours to be undertaken by the ninth assembly, a bill to provide affirmative action for women in political party administration did not scale through. #

Nigeria Hasn’t Properly Utilised Donor Funds – Finance Minister

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, says Nigeria is underutilizing donor funds to deliver planned projects for sustained growth and national development.

She stated this on Tuesday at the retreat for members of the National Assembly organized by the ministry on process optimization in donor-financed projects in Nigeria held in Lagos.

She noted that one of the critical sources of funds for the execution of key projects in Nigeria is through donor financing, especially from multilateral bodies such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank. #

TUC Threatens To Join ASUU On Nationwide Strike

The Trade Union Congress said it will embark on a solidarity strike with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) if the Federal Government fails to resolve the lingering issues with the academics within two weeks.

In a statement signed by TUC President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye, the union said everything must be done to dispense with this impasse within two weeks, to avoid a situation where the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria will embark on a solidarity strike with the University Teachers and their Students.

The TUC also condemned the behavior of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, during a meeting with the National Association of Nigerian Students on Monday, where the Minister walked out on students after voicing their grievances over the ongoing ASUU strike. #

Nearly 680,000 Refugees Flee Ukraine: UNHCR

The head of the United Nation Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi has disclosed that about Six Hundred and Eighty Thousand people have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries since the Russian military invasion on February 24.

In a twitter post, the UNHCR projected that more than four million Ukrainian refugees may eventually need protection and assistance in neighboring countries in the coming days.

The European Union’s crisis management commissioner has said the figure could reach seven million. #

 

2022 W/Cup Playoff: Black Stars Coach Addo To Submit Squad For Eagles Clash Thursday

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo will submit his squad for the 2022 World Cup playoff against Nigeria on Thursday.

The former midfielder will submit the list to the Ghana Football Association for approval on Thursday before an announcement is made, which the team will be dominated by players who took part in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations where the Black Stars exited in the first round.

Captain Andre Ayew will miss both legs of the qualifiers through his red card in the Black Stars’ last game against Comoros.

Ghana will host the first leg on March 25 at the Cape Coast Stadium, with the reverse fixture scheduled for the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja four days later. #
