Anambra Election: Ikpeazu Congratulates Soludo, Commends Ozigbo

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has sent a message of congratulations to the governor-elect of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo on his victory at the just concluded governorship election in the State.

Governor Ikpeazu in a statement by his spokesperson, Onyebuchi Ememanka, noted that with the pedigree of Professor Soludo, the governor-elect has all it takes to provide effective and strong leadership to the people of Anambra State and urged him to give his best in this service.

The governor expressed joy over the magnanimous approach by the governor-elect, especially to his opponents at the last election, and urged them to work together for the good of the people of Anambra State.

Governor Ikpeazu, who is the Deputy Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Chairman of the PDP National Campaign Council for the Anambra State elections also commended the maturity and tenacity of the PDP candidate in the election, Valentine Ozigbo, describing him as a cerebral young man whose conduct and performance in the election are exemplary.

Nnamdi Kanu’s trial: I escaped being lynched-Ejiofor reveals Wednesday’s events

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, one of the lawyers of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has narrated what actually transpired at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, leading to the adjournment of the secessionist leader’s trial by Justice Binta Nyako.

Ejiofor,on Arise TV on Thursday, a day after the appearance of Nnamdi Kanu in court, said the legal team did not walk out on Nyako.

Justice Nyako was forced to adjourn the case till January 19, 2022, due to the absence of Kanu’s legal team.

Kanu had earlier on Wednesday engaged the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in a shouting match inside the courtroom when he observed the absence of his legal team.

However, the defence team, led by Ejiofor was nowhere to be found, prompting Nyako to demand their whereabouts.

Kanu in response told the judge that his lawyers were protesting against the denial of access to his US lawyer, Mr Bruce Fein.

 

Kwara Poly Expels 29 Students Over Exam Malpractices

Kwara State University has expelled twenty-nine students, allegedly  involved in examination malpractices.

According to the institution, the action followed the report of the Academic Board on the issue.

In a statement signed by a Principal Assistant Registrar,  Opadiran Oluwakemi, on behalf of the Registrar,  Kolawole Sheye Akande, the affected students were ordered to immediately leave the school.

 The Polytechnic had last month expelled four students and rusticated six others for similar offences.

The institution, which listed the names of all the affected students in the two instances, advised them to comply strictly with the directive to avoid litigation.

 

Ikoyi Building Collapse: Rescue officials recover more bodies from rubble

Two more bodies were recovered from the site of the 21-storey building which collapsed in Ikoyi, Lagos, last week,  bringing  the death toll from the incident to forty-five

According to Mr Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, who disclosed this in a statement on  Wednesday, said the identification of the bodies of the victims, who died in the 21-storey building at Ikoyi Lagos, has continued at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, Lagos Mainland.

He said the identification exercise is being conducted with samples of DNA submitted by family members adding that thirty-two families have come forward to submit samples for DNA to identify bodies that they wish to claim

The commissioner said the speculations that the two high-rise buildings standing at the site of the 21-storey collapsed building in Ikoyi, will be demolished was false.

CBN promises manufacturers loans of not more than 9% rate

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has assured manufacturers of single-digit loans of not more than 9%.

This was disclosed by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele at the Nigeria International Partnership Forum in Paris, France.

The CBN Governor said that the apex bank’s policy is geared toward increasing exports and reducing imports, and the promotion of ways by which Nigeria can actually produce more of what we usually import.

 Emefiele, who reiterated the government’s determination to discontinue petroleum subsidy payments, also noted that the country’s economy is on the mend thanks to a resurgence in crude oil prices.

The CBN governor also pointed out that inflation rate has dropped from over 18% to 14.1%, adding that as we see a further rebound in crude prices, the rate might still drop.

 South Africa’s last white President is dead

South Africa’s last white president Frederik Willem (FW) de Klerk died on Thursday morning at his home in Cape Town,

The FW de Klerk Foundation which announced this in a statement on Thursday, said he died after a battle with cancer

Former President FW de Klerk died peacefully at his home in Fresnaye earlier this morning following his struggle against mesothelioma cancer,” the statement said.

De Klerk and South Africa’s first black President Nelson Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for leading the “miracle” transition from white rule in the country.

De Klerk had announced his diagnosis on his 85th birthday, on March 18 this year.

He is survived by his wife Elita, children Jan and Susan, and grandchildren.

Steven Gerrard Becomes Aston Villa’s New Manager

Aston Villa on Thursday announced Steven Gerrard as their new manager to replace the sacked Dean Smith.

The former Liverpool captain has left his role as Rangers boss to take the reins at the club, who have lost five straight Premier League matches.

Gerrard guided Rangers to a first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years last season, finishing the campaign undefeated in the league.

According to the  Chief Executive Officer of the club,  Christian Purslow, the board of Aston Villa were delighted to appoint Steven as our new head coach.

Gerrard is considered one of the greatest players in Premier League history, scoring 186 goals in 710 appearances for Liverpool.

However, this will be his first taste of management in the English top-flight.

Aston Villa is  16th in the Premier League after picking up 10 points in their first 11 games.
