The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it would not conduct the Isi-Uzo state constituency by-election, in Enugu State, without security cover.
Enugu State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Emeka Ononamadu, said this at a consultative meeting with media practitioners and Civil Society Organisations in the state capital, on Wednesday.
INEC had fixed October 31, 2020, for the bye-election but had to postpone it following the violence that erupted in the wake of the #EndSARS protests.
The Isi-Uzo State Constituency seat was declared vacant following the death of the member representing the area, the late Chijioke Ugwueze.
Ononamadu said, “We are here to meet with stakeholders to deliberate on a suitable date for Isi -Uzo bye-election postponed due to #EndSARS violence protests.
“This problem was not only in Enugu State. The election was also postponed in all the 11 states across the country where the election was supposed to hold last month
“It’s unfortunate that people are still in fear and the police personnel are yet to come back to duty due to the last month incident and we cannot conduct this election without the presence of Nigeria police personnel.
“Even though we are ready to conduct the Isi Uzo state constituency by-election, we can’t endanger the lives of the people.”
