World environment day: Treat your environment the way you treat your sitting room— Prof Owamah

As Nigerians join the world to celebrate world environment day, Prof Hilary Owamah of Delta State University has called on Nigerians to treat their environment the same way they treat their bedrooms and sitting rooms.
Owamah made this call during a zoom interview with signature TV while discussing the theme of this year celebration “Ecosystem restoration”.
He stated that any act that pollutes, affects or degrades the ecosystem is an act against humanity’s existence.

He said that many Nigerians still drink water from rivers in their communities and depend on other natural resources around them, stressing that if they are polluted, their lives will be endangered.

Owamah further advised Nigerian scientists, industrialists and engineers to be mindful of their environment in their activities, suggesting to adopt processes, techniques and operational strategies that are environment friendly

Also speaking to Signature TV, Dr. Meshach Alfa, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, UNIJOS said that proper orientation on the dangers associated with ecosystem degradation would go a long way to curtail and possibly stop further damage to the ecosystem.

Alfa further highlighted the health benefits of having unpolluted air, water, and fertile land while lamenting the government’s failure to implement policies that protect the environment from harmful human activities.

World environment day is celebrated every year on the 5th of June to remind the world about the importance of nature, with emphasis on ecosystem protection.
