First Lady Hails Wike, Says Posterity Will Remember Abuja Transformation
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for transforming Abuja’s City Gate into a modern recreational and environmental landmark, saying history will judge him kindly for his contributions to the nation’s capital.
Speaking during a ceremony recognising the FCT Administration’s environmental efforts under the Renewed Hope Initiative Green Nigeria Challenge, the First Lady described the revamped City Gate as a model of urban renewal, demonstrating how neglected public spaces can be transformed into attractive recreational centres.
She said the project aligns with the objectives of the Green Nigeria Challenge, which encourages communities and young people to reclaim abandoned spaces, dumpsites and degraded environments.
Senator Tinubu praised the transformation, describing it as “unbelievable,” and lauded Wike for delivering a landmark that now serves as a welcoming gateway to the capital.
The First Lady, however, expressed disappointment that no state participated in the Community Category of the Green Nigeria Challenge despite a ₦50 million prize aimed at encouraging environmental restoration projects led by youths.
She urged the wives of state governors to mobilise children and young people to join environmental clubs and sustainability programmes in schools and tertiary institutions, stressing that environmental stewardship is vital to national development.
Responding, Wike disclosed that the City Gate project was inspired by the First Lady, who challenged the FCT Administration to improve Abuja’s appearance after observing well-designed city entrances abroad.
The minister said the administration engaged the original designers of the City Gate to develop a new concept that has transformed the site into a vibrant public space attracting visitors day and night.
Wike also announced plans to replicate the initiative in Abuja’s Lifecamp area by redesigning an existing green space into another modern recreation centre.
He reaffirmed that environmental sustainability remains central to urban development, noting that clean, green surroundings enhance the beauty and livability of cities.
The event concluded with the presentation of Certificates of Commendation to Wike and the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, by the First Lady on behalf of the Renewed Hope Initiative, while organisers announced that entries for the Household and State categories of the Green Nigeria Challenge remain open until December 20, 2026.
