Court Grant Sowore 200 Million Bail
A federal high court in Abuja has granted a 200 million naira bail to Omoyele Sowore, activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress.
The presiding judge, Mohammed Umar at the resumed hearing on Tuesday, restored Sowore’s bail with fresh conditions including the providing two sureties.
According to the judge, one of the sureties should be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second surety must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory.
The judge also ordered Sowore to deposit his passport with the court registrar as part of the bail conditions pending the determination of the case.
The Department of State Services is prosecuting Sowore on a two-count charge over a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a criminal on his X and Facebook accounts.
The activist had pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently granted bail on self-recognition.
However, on June 16, the presiding judge revoked Sowore’s bail and issued a warrant of arrest against him after the activist failed to attend the day’s proceedings on the ground that the letter seeking an adjournment on Sowore’s behalf did not provide reasons for his absence from court.
