Enugu Trains Caregivers On Child Nutrition, Poverty Eradication
The Enugu State Ministry of Human Development and Poverty Eradication, in collaboration with the Enugu State Ministry of Health, the Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency, and UNICEF, has organized a four-day capacity strengthening programme for caregivers under the First 1000 Days Dietary Diversity Initiative.
The training, held at the Nkanu West Local Government Area Headquarters, focuses on combating child malnutrition and eradicating poverty through integrated community-based approaches.
The four-day training, which runs from March 17th to 20th, 2026, brings together caregivers and community members to enhance their knowledge of child nutrition and healthy living. Participants are being trained on how to prepare balanced and nutritious meals using locally available food resources, a strategy aimed at improving child health outcomes, particularly within the critical first 1000 days of life.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Eradication, Benedette Okolie, identified the selection of underserved beneficiaries as a major challenge.
She emphasized that the administration’s goal is to achieve zero percent poverty, noting that empowerment for participants will commence immediately after the training, facilitated by qualified resource persons.
According to her, the programme cuts across all wards in the state, ensuring inclusiveness and wider community impact.
Some participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, highlighting the practical knowledge gained, particularly in preparing nutritious meals with readily available ingredients.
They described the training as impactful and essential for improving family health and well-being.
Officials say the initiative goes beyond training, as it includes follow-up engagements and empowerment programmes designed to support caregivers in applying the knowledge gained.
