IGP to policemen: don’t leave public space for criminals

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu has urged police officers and men not to leave the public space open for criminals to operate.

He advised them to cover public spaces across the country to ensure tight security for law-abiding citizens and their properties.

The police chief noted that the #EndSARS protests, which were later hijacked by hoodlums, were caused by circulation of fake news.

Adamu stated this on Wednesday while addressing police officers and men in Edo State at the state headquarters in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin, the state capital.

It was during his working visit to boost their morale, after inspecting the burnt police stations in the state.

The IGP was accompanied by Edo Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu; the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 5, Sholla David, and Police Commissioner Babatunde Kokumo.

He said: “Your sense of professionalism has shown that you did not give room for the bad guys to succeed. Thank you for that.

“The protesters went to the police stations to attack the police officers and men because they wanted them to react with maximum force. But because you are professionals, you are resilient and you know what you are doing, you did not apply maximum force. You applied minimum force and they were disappointed. The police of yesteryears are not the same with the modern police that we have.

“The attacks on the police and police stations were to demoralize you (policemen), to humiliate you and to make you feel that you do not have support at all from the public. But this is not the case.”
