• Commends subjects for investing in Agriculture
The Traditional Ruler of Enugu Na Mkpokoro Achi, in Oji River Local Government Area, Igwe Chima Achiekwelu, (Eze Ishiala) Saturday, 10th of October, 2020 hosted the annual New Yam Festival.
The age-long New Yam Festival which usually celebrates the successful farming and harvest season in the old Achi Clan is traditionally known as Nneche Ji.
In his address at the occasion Igwe Achiekwelu thanked the God for the great agricultural yield witnessed in his community and commended his subjects for investing in Agriculture which according to him is key to fighting poverty in the rural communities.
The Traditional Ruler also commended the Enugu State Governor, Honourable Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for providing a peaceful environment which has guaranteed true growth and development in the State.
This year’s festival which was well attended by Achi sons and daughters from within and outside the country was spiced with a wrestling and boxing match as well as performances by various cultural troupes.
Prizes won by winners include tricycles, motorcycles, refrigerators, generators and other cash prizes which many described as fitting incentives for promoting the culture of the people.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Oji River Local Government Area who promised government support for the festival, commended Igwe Achiekwelu for his unrelenting effort in promoting and preserving the Achi culture and tradition which well harnessed has the capacity to boost tourism and the well-being of the rural communities.
Government officials, traditional rulers and notable sons and daughters of Achi attended this year’s New Yam Festival which witnessed a large crowd of cultural enthusiasts.
