▪︎ABOUAD medical students and staff allegedly exposed to deceased American index roam free

The Italian Coronavirus index case in Nigeria has been discharged after testing negative.

He was discharged on Friday evening from the Isolation centre in Yaba.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed the development on his official Twitter handle.

The Italian who was first diagnosed with Covid 19 in Nigeria is now free of the virus and was, on Friday evening, allowed to leave the isolation centre of Yaba Mainland Hospital where he was quarantined and treated.

“As the COVID-19 Incident Commander for Lagos State, I am glad to inform you that the index case the Italian gentleman is now negative.

“Through a combined effort of Lagos State, Ogun State and Federal Health Authorities, we were able to limit the transmission of the virus to a single contact.

“This involved aggressive contact tracing and containment strategies. However, we now have several new imported cases and we hope we can apply the same contact tracing strategy along with social distancing to slow down the outbreak which may be brewing from these new cases.

“The index patient consented to donate one unit of white blood (otherwise called plasma) before he was discharged today. The blood plasma is rich in antibody proteins that target the #COVID19 virus.

“The white blood plasma is frozen in our Bio-bank and will be useful in handling new cases.

“The blood plasma will be beneficial for the treatment of new patients in the absence of a defined therapeutic drug for #COVID19 yet.

“The index patient appreciated the exceptional care and support given to him by the staff of the mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, all members of the EOC / @followlasg.

“The EOC team was extremely happy to bid the patient farewell.

FEAR GRIP AFE BABALOLA COMMUNITY

Meanwhile students and concerned staff are calling on the management of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti to shut down the institution immediately.

The call is predicated on the fear that the school authorities may not have followed due process and global containment procedures in handling the American Corona Index who allegedly died in Afe Babalola Teaching Hospital recently.

In a leaked recorded audio message in the possession of signaturetv.org and officials of Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, (NCDC), members of the school community indicate that ABUAD authorities did nothing to ensure that medical students and staff who spent time at the Teaching Hospital during the hospitalization of the index patient were traced and containment strategies activated.

They accuse the University leadership of neglecting calls to follow due process in its handling of the index case to stop the spread of the deadly global disease and ensure the safety of members of the Academic community.

In the audio message, they wonder the reason why the institution’s authorities knowing the havoc the uncontained virus could wreak on the community have refused against every advice and government directive to shut the school down.

Ongoing efforts to speak to an official of the University located in Ado Ekiti on the matter had not yielded any results as at 4.30am when signaturetv.org updated this report.
