The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has uncovered a significant case of fraud involving 99 individuals who were fraudulently mobilized from the University of Calabar between 2021 and 2023. Additionally, two other individuals, who were granted exemptions, were also part of this fraudulent mobilization. In response, the NYSC has taken the firm step of invalidating the Certificates of National Service for all 101 individuals involved.

In a statement released by Eddy Megwa, the Director of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC, the organization highlighted its ongoing commitment to upholding the integrity of the National Service. The NYSC made it clear that only qualified individuals—those who have graduated from accredited universities—are eligible to receive the Certificate of National Service. The NYSC stressed that individuals from unaccredited institutions, whether they studied in Nigeria or abroad, will not be recognized or mobilized for service.

The NYSC’s decision to invalidate these certificates is part of a broader effort to maintain the credibility of the National Youth Service and protect the integrity of the program. The organization is taking proactive steps to ensure that fraudulent activities are identified and addressed swiftly.

Furthermore, the NYSC has urged the public, especially key stakeholders such as employers, government ministries, departments and agencies, corporate organizations, religious institutions, and multinational companies, to be vigilant. They are encouraged to verify the authenticity of any Certificates of National Service, as well as Exemption and Exclusion Letters, presented by individuals. This verification can be done through the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja, ensuring that only legitimate certificates are accepted for employment, further education, or other official purposes.

This move underscores the NYSC’s dedication to preventing the misuse of its certificates and ensuring that the National Service program continues to be a credible and respected institution in Nigeria. The organization’s actions serve as a warning to other institutions and individuals who might attempt to manipulate the system, reinforcing the message that fraud will not be tolerated within the NYSC.
