FG settles NiMet staff’s 45-month wage arrears
The Federal Government has finally settled the 45-month outstanding minimum wage arrears owed to the staff of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), addressing a long-standing source of tension within the agency. This development was announced in a statement dated August 12, 2024, signed by the Secretary of the NiMet Unions Joint Action Committee, Okechukwu Nwokoro.

The arrears, which accumulated from 2019, had created significant unrest among NiMet employees, leading to repeated clashes between the agency’s management and labor unions. Earlier this year, the situation nearly escalated into a full-blown strike, with unions planning to down tools on May 20, 2024. The strike was narrowly avoided after a last-minute intervention by the House Committee on Aviation Technology and its Senate counterpart. An agreement was reached on May 19, 2024, during a special session convened by the House Committee, chaired by Abiodun Akinlade, with representatives from NiMet management and the unions in attendance.
Professor Charles Anosike, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for authorizing the payment, noting that the issue of unpaid arrears predates the current administration. Anosike praised the President for demonstrating his commitment to workers, despite the arrears originating before his tenure. He also thanked Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and the members of the House and Senate Committees on Aviation for their crucial roles in resolving the issue.
The NiMet Unions Joint Action Committee also expressed their appreciation to President Tinubu, Minister Keyamo, and the legislative committees involved, acknowledging the significant impact the payment has had on alleviating the financial difficulties faced by NiMet staff. The unions highlighted that this resolution has renewed their commitment to serving the nation with excellence and praised Professor Anosike for his leadership and dedication to the welfare of NiMet employees.
In their statement, the unions emphasized that the settlement of the arrears has not only eased the financial burden on the staff but also strengthened their resolve to continue delivering high-quality meteorological services. They expressed their deep appreciation for the collective efforts that led to the resolution, recognizing the positive difference it has made in the lives of many NiMet employees.
