Port Harcourt Targets 10,000 Runners as International Marathon Goes Continental
Port Harcourt is set to welcome about 10,000 athletes from Nigeria, West Africa and East Africa for the 2026 Port Harcourt International Half Marathon, scheduled for November 14.
Organisers say the 21-kilometre race marks a major milestone as the event transitions from a national competition to an international sporting festival after a decade of hosting mostly Nigerian participants.
Speaking at the official unveiling in Port Harcourt, Convener Goodluck Azunwena described the marathon as more than a sporting event, saying it will promote tourism, economic growth, youth empowerment, healthy living and global visibility for the Rivers State capital.
The 2026 edition, themed “Green Race,” is expected to double participation from previous years, with organisers projecting at least 10,000 registered runners. They also assured participants that adequate security arrangements have been put in place for a successful event.
Marathon official Diri Dikibujuri said the 10th edition is themed “Port Harcourt to the World,” reflecting the event’s expanded international outlook and commitment to sustainability.
According to her, the “Green Race” symbolises life, renewal and growth, while promoting environmental sustainability, culture, education, youth development and community engagement in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Organisers say activities before, during and after the race will focus on restoring Port Harcourt’s reputation as Nigeria’s Garden City while positioning it as a leading destination for international sports tourism.
