Power-drunk policeman threatens to shoot Nigerian Olympic athlete
Divine Oduduru, a Nigerian athlete, on Wednesday said a policeman threatened to shoot him.
Oduduru, who joggles between the USA and Nigeria, expressed his disappointment with the unprofessionalism shown by a gun-wielding police officer whilst he was in Africa recently, according to reports.
Although, he did not state where exactly in Nigeria he was harassed, the African Games 2019 200m Silver medalist said the discourteous policeman even hit him.
“I wonder how safe I can be coming home to Nigeria. Police telling me that he will shoot and nothing will happen. Even crack his gun and slap me on my chest,” Oduduru wrote on his known Facebook page.
Over the last few years, Nigeria has been rocked by nationwide protests over police brutality.
In October 2020, the youth of Nigeria decided to stand up for their rights and hold a peaceful protest for the government to disband the special unit of the police force called SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad). This unit had been known for their harassment, extortion and killing of innocent people. SARS was eventually disbanded.
