The racist attacks which greeted substantial part of Guangzhou in the South Eastern region of China in about a month ago is gradually abating.
.
The President, Association of Nigerian Community in Guangzhou, Maximus Ogbonna, said this in a television program, Sunrise Daily, on Channels Television monitored in Abuja on Monday.

He said the problem began when Chinese authorities in Guangzhou embarked on massive quarantining of foreigners in the area in the belief that they were infested with the new coronavirus.

“They were moving from house to house forcing people out and placing them on quarantine,” he said.

The Chinese authorities were doing this without informing the embassies and consulates of these foreigners.

Mr Ogbonna, however informed that ambassadors from Africa and other affected countries have had series of meetings with the Chinese authorities and that things are getting better.

The President, Association of Nigerian Community in Guangzhou added that the Chinese authorities in the area needs to do more to bring the situation to normality.

“Guangzhou authorities need to re-orient their citizens to let them know that foreigners are not the carriers of COVID-19.

In the past one-two weeks it was tough. Chinese authorities are however, doing their best to resolve the problem and things are gradually returning to normality.

Businesses and restaurants are opening and people are allowed in but Chinese taxi drivers are not allowing blacks to enter their vehicles and some of them are still avoiding foreigners,” he added.

Mr Maximus Ogbonna also said that the Nigerian consulate in the Guangzhou area and the embassy in Beijing in collaboration with the authorities in Guangzhou are doing their best to normalize the situation.
