Borno Elders Forum  says Nowhere is safe outside Maiduguri, debunks lies of military, FG

Prof. Khalifa Dikwa, Dean, Borno Elders Forum said contrary to the narrative by the military and the Federal Government, nowhere is safe outside of Maiduguri, capital of Borno State.

He said so bad is the security situation that not even 5km outside of Maiduguri is safe.

Dikwa while fielding question from newsmen on Monday said the military did not heed the advice of the Private Military Contractor (PMC), to man the country’s land borders after they had “decimated” Boko Haram in 2014.

When President Buhari ascended the throne in May 2015, he dispensed with the services of the contractors, by putting all his trust in the army, believing that they would safeguard the territorial integrity of Nigeria. #

 

Nigeria Records Highest Single-Day COVID-19 Cases As Lagos Orders Reopening Of Schools

 

Nigeria on Monday recorded its highest figure of COVID-19 cases in a day since the outbreak of the disease in February 2020, as the Lagos State government issued a directive for schools to reopen.

This was disclosed in a late-night tweet by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

It revealed that a total of 1,204 new confirmed cases were reported from 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Of the figure, Lagos State reported the highest number of infections in a single day, with 654 new cases.#

 

Family of Teenager Who Accused Ogun Commissioner Of Sexual Harassment Withdraws Case

The family of Melojuekun Barakat, a teenager allegedly sexually harassed by the Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Abiodun Abudu-Balogun, has withdrawn the allegation.

The father of 16-year-old Barakat, Monsuru Melojuejun has expressed his desire to discontinue with the case against the commissioner.

In a viral video on social media, the victim’s father said he is not interested in pressing further the matter further, begging Nigerians and international community and the media to support him by laying the matter to rest.

He attributed the reason to “few misconceptions and misunderstanding” along the line in the alleged case of sexual harassment proffered against the commissioner. #

 

Niger Declares National Mourning Over Jihadists’ Killing Of 100 Villagers

Niger Republic on Monday declared three days of mourning and vowed to beef up security in a western border region where jihadists killed 100 villagers.

Scores of “terrorists,” arriving by motorbike, killed 70 people in the village of Tchoma Bangou and 30 in Zaroumadareye, local mayor Almou Hassane told newsmen on Sunday.

It was the biggest single massacre of civilians in the Sahel’s eight-year-old history of Islamist unrest, according to a U.S group, ACLED, which tracks the violence.

Alhada, speaking by phone after a meeting of the National Security Council headed by President Mahamadou Issoufou, said troop numbers would be increased to achieve “greater saturation” of the area. #

 

Arsenal Defender Saliba Joins French Side Nice On Loan

Arsenal defender William Saliba has moved to Nice on loan until the end of the season, both clubs announced on Monday.

In a statement, Ligue 1 outfit Nice said the deal with Arsenal for the 19-year-old was without an option to buy, although a source close to the deal told Newsmen that the loan could be extended into next season.

Arsenal said that the move had the aim of giving Saliba “the chance for more competitive playing time”.

Saliba has yet to feature for the Gunners’ first team since joining from Saint-Etienne in June. #
