Trade unions are victims of circumstances in Nigeria- Ayuba Wabba

The President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba says Nigerian trade unions are victims of economic circumstances in Nigeria.

He made the statement at the 3rd  national Quadrennial Conference of Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education, SSUCOEN, held in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ayuba while commenting on the theme of the conference “trade unions and emerging challenges in the world of work”   stated that the government sees trade unions as a problem and therefore payment of workers as a waste.

Ayuba Wabba at the 3rd  national Quadrennial Conference of Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education maintained that the development of Society was not an investment in infrastructure alone rather in the welfare and economic security of the people.

Speaking further, he stated that Nigeria should not expect peace in industrial relations when collective bargaining and agreements with employers are not respected.

Ayuba added that education is the key for the development of every society with the high quality of teacher being the foundation and therefore should be prioritized.

He promised to support SSUCOEN  and ensure that workers’ rights are protected.

Danladi Msheliza, the president of Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education Nigeria lamented the poor funding of colleges of Education by governments at all level which he said portends grave danger to teacher education.

Msheliza, therefore, called on the government to have a rethink on the kind of attention it pays to the foundation of teachers which is colleges of education.

The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE, also stated that the way to have a quality basic education is by having qualified teachers, adding that the commission is working tirelessly to create the enabling environment for adequate teacher education in the country.

The national quadrennial conference of Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education Nigeria is organized every four years to elect new leaders for the union.
